SCA Certified Home Brewer Program
The Science Behind Delicious Coffee
Developed by coffee science experts and professional coffee tasters, this program reviews brewers designed for in-home use to determine if they meet the rigorous requirements of brewed coffee quality as determined by the SCA. These requirements are based on decades of industry knowledge and research by the Coffee Brewing Center. All SCA Certified Brewers have met these requirements, which are based on proper water temperature, brewing time, and ability to brew within the SCA Golden Cup recommendations. If a brewer passes all of the tests as described below and conducted by the SCA, that brewer will be recognized as an exemplary home brewer and join the short list of SCA Certified Brewers.
As of 2014, the SCA has renewed its cooperation with the European Coffee Brewing Center, who also has a longstanding and reputable home brewer testing program. These programs, although serving separate markets, are aligned in both testing requirements, procedures, and rigor. Today, these organizations are together committed to the highest level of transparency and testing to promote better coffee brewing worldwide.

Getting Started
Submitting a prototype brewer can provide valuable feedback during development. Please be sure to contact us to discuss testing possibilities.
All manufacturers submitting a brewer for testing will receive a full test report regardless of its pass/fail status. The report will be delivered within two weeks of testing.
If the brewer passes all tests and enters a certification agreement with the SCA, it will be considered an SCA Certified Home Brewer. The brewer will be listed on the SCA web site as an exemplary home brewer. Use of the SCA Certified Home Brewer logo on packaging or other marketing materials is required for Certified Home Brewers and contingent on a certification in good standing, completed certification agreement, and fees paid before logos are used by the certified brewer manufacturer. Fees are comprised of yearly licensing fees of $5000 per year for three years.
Model Type & Quantity
We accept both prototypes and production run models for testing. If your brewer is in the prototype stage, plan to ship only one unit. If you have a brewer in production and ready for retail shelves, we ask that you send (3) units for testing.
The value of the Certified Home Brewer program increases as consumers take more interest in Specialty Coffee. We are thrilled to partner with you to as we all work toward excellence in coffee brewing.
The SCA Brewer Certification Program will run on a quarterly testing schedule. Brewers may be received at any time during the year, but will only be tested during the testing period.
Terms and Renewal
This certification has a term of three years, or until the design of production models change, whichever occurs sooner, at which point the model must be re-tested by the SCA for continued participation in this certification program. The SCA requires the manufacturer to send (3) units for re-tests and certification renewals. The brewer testing fee will also apply.
